Tough start for Newbury FC, as Kintbury Rangers make it eight in a row
Newbury Football Club suffered disappointment in their first home match of the season on Saturday.
Having lost away to Burghfield on the opening day of the Thames Valley Premier League season, the newly promoted side looked to turn things around as AFC Winkfield travelled to Henwick Playing Fields.
Things got off to a bright start, as James O’Doherty’s strike put Newbury 1-0 up early on.
They were unable to hold on to this advantage for long, as Herman Addo-Quaynor equalised after just ten minutes.
Just two minutes later, David Neligwa made it 2-1 to Winkfield before Addo-Quaynor scored again in the second half to seal a 3-1 win for his side.
The result leaves Newbury second from bottom, having lost three out of three so far.
Saturday also saw Kintbury Rangers make it eight wins in a row, as they faced Bemerton Heath Harlequins in the Wiltshire Senior League Premier Division.
Goals from Tom Mahoney, Terry Patton, Jake Allan, Harry Way and Jack Afonso made it 5-0 by half-time, before Alfonso and Aidan Maycock made it seven in the second half to seal a dominant home win.
Elsewhere in the Thames Valley Premier Division, Tadley Calleva Reserves beat Henley Town 3-0 thanks to goals from Harrison West, Lors Nicholas and Jordan Holmes.
Burghfield suffered a 4-1 defeat away at Wargrave, with Oliver Brown’s goal a mere consolation.
In Division One, Goring United made a great start to their season as they visited Fleet Spurs on opening day.
Goals from Innes Walker, George Scoffham and a brace from Matthew Hayden sealed a 4-1 win.
Mortimer Reserves had a big win of their own, beating Westwood Wanderers Reserves 4-0 away from home thanks to a goal from Andrew Johnstone-Archer and a Graham Lewis hat-trick.
Burghfield Reserves travelled to Yateley United A, where they won 3-1 thanks to Max Eden’s strike and two from Mattie James.
Division Two’s opening day proved to be a tough one for AFC Aldermaston Reserves, as they were well beaten at home by Allied Community Elite, who ran out 6-0 victors.
