Rocky Golby wins again to book quarter-final spot in England Boxing Junior Championships

Local boxer Rocky Golby enjoyed more success on Sunday, as he won in the pre-quarter final of the England Boxing Junior Championships.

Last month he beat Ethan Gray to become Home Counties Junior Cadet Champion, qualifying him for Sunday’s clash.

15-year-old Golby of Turnpike, Newbury, returned to Carterton on Sunday to face Liam Tate from Taunton, the current Western Counties Champion.

Tate is an International Box Cup winner with four knock-out wins to his name.

Golby overcame these odds however, winning via a 4-1 split decision.

Golby came out strongly in the first and second rounds, showing his superior skill.

He landed a number of clean shots later in the fight to edge the contest in his favour.

His win was met with celebrations from the 40-strong crowd there to support him, many from Didcot Amateur Boxing Academy.

He will now compete in the quarter-finals in Peterborough next Sunday, where he’ll face the Eastern Counties Champion.

If he can win that, he’ll book his place in the semi-finals held in Wigan.
