HUNGERFORD will go into next week’s Evo Stik League Southern Premier play-offs again bidding to join the comparative giants of the Vanarama National League South.

Tuesday night’s win in Cambridgeshire guarantees them a place in the extended season, and now it is question of which team they play in the semi-finals on Monday or Tuesday.

Hungerford go to Leamington on Saturday, when success against a side that may have to win to join the mix, will guarantee them the second place they currently hold and the potential of two home play-off games. A third place finish will certainly bring an opening home tie and anything else is likely to mean hitting the road.

Hungerford hit a bumpy road to Cambridge, where a dour first half saw them labour to break down a resilient home side packed with academy products. Histon came out after the break, led by skipper Rogan McGeorge’s long-range shooting that slipped the bar and twice forced Paul Strudley to save.

But Hungerford settled once Stefan brown had fired them ahead on 57 minutes, and Brown struck again three minutes later. Substitute’s Harry Goodger’s neat finish completed the scoring and completed the first stage of what is now a four-step trip to the highest level of football in west Berkshire’s history.
