Newbury Velo Cycling Club gears up for most dynamic year yet

Newbury Velo Cycling Club has unveiled its 2025 calendar.

The 38th Newbury Triathlon, Summer Cyclocross, Social Cycling, Cycling for Visually Impaired riders and Kids Coaching are all scheduled for this year.

West Berkshire's largest cycling club will head into what promises to be its busiest year since its formation just over five years ago.

The club, which recently took the reins of the prestigious Newbury Triathlon, has announced a program that caters to cyclists and triathletes of all ages and abilities.

This expansion is part of the club's commitment to fostering both competitive excellence and community engagement.

"What we've put together for 2025 represents not just our growth as a club, but our vision for inclusive cycling in Newbury," said club chair Simon Bowden.

Central to the 2025 calendar is the introduction of the Newbury Velo Triathlon Series, an initiative designed to provide regular competitive opportunities for the club's growing triathlon membership.

This will complement the cornerstone triathlon event of the year – the 38th Newbury Triathlon – which finds its new home under Newbury Velo's stewardship.

“Over the years, the event has grown in popularity and has become a staple in the local sporting calendar,” said Martin Colson, the club’s triathlon lead.

“The Newbury Triathlon continues to attract participants from all over the country, showcasing the town of Newbury as a hub for triathlon enthusiasts.”

The club celebrates its sixth anniversary in November this year, and now stands as the custodian of nearly four decades of sporting heritage.

Young riders haven't been forgotten in the 2025 program.

The calendar features regular coaching sessions, family-friendly rides, and junior racing opportunities at the Summer cyclocross series and the Hill Climb later in the summer.

"We're investing in the next generation of cyclists," explained Melanie Sneddon, the club's lead coach.

"These young riders are the future of our local cycling, and we're committed to providing them with the best possible introduction to cycling."

Adult members can look forward to a packed schedule of group rides, training sessions, and competitive events catering to all abilities – from newcomers to experienced racers.

The club has planned its events to create progression pathways, allowing members to develop their skills and confidence throughout the year.

The calendar also includes local tours, social rides, mountain biking and gravel riding, and cycling for less abled riders, including an ambitious twist to the annual Hill Climb in September.

Another key event of the year will be the first annual Newbury Time Trial Challenge, which will see Newbury Velo race head to head with Newbury Road Club, where both clubs will strive to win the Newbury Time Trial Challenge Trophy.

The club continues to welcome new members of all abilities.
