What’s on for the bank holiday weekend in West Berkshire and North Hampshire




Friday

The Hackles, ACE Space, Newbury, 8pm-10.30pm. Currently touring the UK from Oregon, with support from Helen Wren. Book by calling Stephen on 07891 176940.

Singer Steve Whale, Newbury Royal British Legion, Pelican Lane, 8.30pm-11pm. All welcome.

Legacy social dance, sequence, ballroom and Latin, Kennet School, Thatcham, from 7.30pm-11pm. Music by Matthew Bason. No bar, all welcome. Pay at the door.

Saturday

Charity quiz night, 7.30pm at Wash Common Community Centre. £7 per team, max five people per team. Raising money for the Maureen Church Fund for the Victoria Ward at Royal Berkshire Hospital. More details on 01635 33887.

Open Studio and garden at Rookery Farm Studio, Woolton Hill, RG20 9XP, 11am-5pm. Art exhibition, free teas and plant sale in aid of Fairclose Dementia Charity. Also open on Sunday (May 26) and Monday (May 27).


Big Bowls Open Day at Hungerford Bowls Club, The Croft, from 12pm-5pm. Everyone is welcome, bowls will be provided, just wear flat shoes or trainers. Refreshments available. If you can’t make the open day just turn up to a friendly, social practice session, on Monday between 6pm-8pm or Tuesday and Friday between 2pm-4pm. Sunday

Highclere Show, Highclere Castle, 9am-5pm. Displays, stalls and food and drink available. You can pre-book tickets at www.highclereshow.co.uk to avoid the queues. Parking is free and dogs are welcome. Also on Monday (May 27).

Shaw House open day, Newbury. Access many of the areas not normally open to the public, including the ‘forbidden corridor’ and the basement tunnel. There will be free introductory talks about the history of the house in the Great Hall at 11.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm (no need to book). The bake house viewings are free but must be pre-booked online and spaces will be limited. Café service will run as usual. Also open on Monday (May 27).

Monday

The 14th Newbury 10K, starts Market Place, Newbury, from 9am. Multi-terrain race, with two shorter races for under 16s. Entries are now closed but you can go along and cheer the runners on. All profits will be split between Newbury AC, Newbury Soup Kitchen and Loose Ends Newbury.

The annual Yattendon & Frilsham Village Fete, Yattendon village, from 1pm-4.30pm. Entrance £4, concessions £2, under 16s free. Free parking available. Raising money for good causes locally. Games, stalls, fun dog show, Pimms tent, BBQ and local ales.

LGBTQ+ Family Morning, West Berkshire Museum, 10.30am-12pm. Free entry. A relaxed morning at the museum, providing a safe space for local LGBTQ+ families to meet one another and be involved in a creative activity.

Tuesday

Countdown to D Day display at Pangbourne Library. Hosted by Pangbourne Heritage Group. Runs until June 10.
