West Berkshire awarded national tourism status from VisitEngland alongside other local authorities

West Berkshire has been awarded national tourism status alongside other local councils.

The district has achieved accreditation as a Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) from VisitEngland, the country’s tourist board.

It means the partnership, including West Berkshire, is now directly connected with the national tourist board and UK government – giving local businesses a bigger voice and visibility in policy and funding decisions for the first time in more than 20 years.

Chief executive of Newbury BID Trish Willetts said: “On behalf of Newbury BID and Visit Newbury, we are delighted to be joining with our neighbours for this moment to start showcasing the region and the fantastic leisure and business tourism opportunities available to both domestic and international markets.”

West Berkshire Council executive member for economic development and regeneration Justin Pemberton (Lib Dem, Thatcham West) added: “This is a significant milestone in our ambition to deliver an ambitious visitor economy that benefits both our residents and local businesses.

“By working together in this partnership, WBC and the other local authorities can share our strengths and create and enhance attractive visitor destinations that put Berkshire on the map.”

The successful application from the six local authorities in Berkshire is the direct result of an 18-month project in partnership with Berkshire businesses and industry leaders.

While the decision does not come with funding from VisitEngland, the status will give West Berkshire and the partners access to development and funding opportunities only available for those with the accreditation.

VisitEngland eirector Andrew Stokes said: “The programme is transforming the visitor economy landscape in England, supporting its growth in a more inclusive, accessible and sustainable way.

“Working together, the LVEPs are simplifying our tourism landscape, ensuring England continues to be a compelling destination for both domestic and international visitors.

“As Berkshire is established as an LVEP, VisitEngland will provide ongoing support including a dedicated regional lead.”

The LVEP will now be led by VisitWindsor, the royal borough’s tourism department, working in partnership with councils in West Berkshire, Bracknell Forest, Reading, Slough and Wokingham alongside VisitNewbury, Reading’s Economy and Destination Agency, landscape management organisations, Berkshire Film Office, education providers and community groups.

It will also link the Berkshire partnership with other LVEPs with clear targets for growth and a strong focus on sustainability, accessibility and support for businesses.
