Walkers raised raise almost £2,000 for Alzheimer’s Society after 14-mile charity trek
A team of fundraisers have raised almost £2,000 after completing a 14-mile charity walk.
The team, led by Andrew Johnston, walked from Theale to The Plough on the Green pub in Newbury in November and raised £1,926.86 for the Alzheimer’s Society.
The walk lasted six hours and 20 minutes along the Kennet and Avon Canal.
Mr Johnston and his friends were inspired to raise the sum after knowing people who have been affected by dementia.
Reflecting on the walk, Mr Johnston said: “This was a team effort from start to finish and I am incredibly grateful to everyone who donated, walked and supported us along the way.
“The support we’ve received will help Alzheimer’s Society continue its amazing work, providing vital help and hope to those living with dementia and their families.”
He also thanked the The Plough on the Green, Newbury Nuffield Gym, Murco Garage in Hermitage and the whole Greenham community for its vital contributions.
Mr Johnston added his team were overwhelmed by the generosity of passers-by during the walk, and were cheered as they passed through Newbury.
At the end of the walk, they enjoyed a well-deserved pint at The Plough on the Green.
Alzheimer’s Society regional fundraiser Georgia Thornton said: “We are so grateful to Andrew and his team for raising such an incredible amount.
“Each hour people generously gave to fundraise for us will make a life-changing difference to people living with dementia.
“There are around a million people living with dementia in the UK.
“But we simply can’t reach everyone without the support from our incredible fundraisers like Andrew.
“Together, we will end the devastation caused by dementia.”
