VIDEO: Aftermath of gas explosion in Newbury

This was the scene at Bodin Gardens this morning after a huge gas explosion during the night led to four houses being evacuated and two residents ending up in hospital.

A late night bonfire had spread to a shed containing gas canisters which promptly ignited, causing an explosion which could be heard for miles around.

The fire that resulted spread across the neighbouring gardens and could be seen from across the A339.

The fences at the bottoms of the gardens were destroyed, and what was in the garden at the time - including a trampoline - was left a charred mess.

Guttering running along the top of the house was damaged, while the remnants of a gas canister and a rabbit hutch can also be seen in the video and photos.

The fire services and South Central Ambulance Service were called at around 1.20am, and four engines - two from Newbury, one from Hungerford and one from Theale - worked to extinguish the fire.

Residents were able to return to their homes by 3.30am.

Two residents were treated at the scene for injuries and then taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital. Their condition is not known.

Thames Valley Police press office has been contacted but said it was unable to find the incident in their logs.
