Newbury's Trinity School pupils get creative for art exhibition

Students at the Trinity School in Newbury displayed all their creative talent as the school held its annual Art, Design and Technology exhibition.

This year’s theme was ‘illusion’, and students were tasked with creating either an art piece, product, architecture or fashion design based on the theme, allowing students to demonstrate their creativity across art, design and food.

Trinity staff were impressed by the highly thoughtful and imaginative responses produced by the students and had a tough job narrowing down students’ entries to create a shortlist that formed an exhibition for students, parents and staff.

The students rose to the challenge of exemplifying the school’s motto of ‘Personal Excellence’, with the dedication and time put into the entries this year.

This year’s guest judges were Sabrina Talana-Carruth, a local designer and maker, Jan Murray, education officer at Newbury and District Agricultural Society, and Emma Clifton-Brown, the artist in residence at Trinity School.

The judges were incredibly impressed with the standard of work from students and commented on the difficulty of selecting winners among the high levels of engagement, enthusiasm and creative flair seen in the entries.

Pupils and parents were then invited to see the work on display on the evening of Thursday, March 17, where awards were then presented to students in third, second and first place for each category – art, design and cakes.

This year’s winning design entry was produced by Samuel Donegan in Year 10, who created a digitally-designed architectural model for an ‘upside down house’, which focused on structural illusion and sustainable living and inclusivity for homes of the future.

The winning cake design was produced by Year 7 student, Louise Colby, who created an illusion cake that looked like noodles; and the winning art entry was produced by Milly Purcell in Year 12 who created a painting that plays with the illusion of the human form and facial features.

A spokesperson for the school said: “We are incredibly proud of all of our students who entered work this year and this competition, which we hold annually, provides students with the opportunity to develop their interest further for the disciplines of art, design, technology and food beyond the curriculum and provides an opportunity for all students to shine with their creative talent.”
