Tributes paid to Thatcham stalwart
Peter Gildersleeves died at Thatcham Court Nursing home on Thursday morning, aged 77.
Mr Gildersleeves (pictured with his late wife, Judith) served as a town councillor for more than 30 years, had been a representative of Thatcham Town Football Club and had been the president of the Thatcham branch of the Royal British Legion.
He also served as town mayor four times.
In 1994, Mr Gildersleeves was appointed an OBE for his work for the civil service.
About a month ago, he was awarded a Thatcham Town Council civic award for his services to the town.
When announcing Mr Gildersleeves as a winner of a civic award, former mayor Lee Dillon, said: “He is a true servant to the town.”
His daughter, Deborah Gildersleeves, said: “He was always very keen and liked the fact that he could take on people’s issues and make a difference.
“He would move heaven and earth to try to help.”
His granddaughter, Charlie Greer, said: “He loved people.”
His funeral will take place on Friday, June 8 at St Mary’s Church, Thatcham at 2pm.
All have been invited to attend.
