Storm Henk: Strong winds with gusts of up to 70mph hit West Berkshire with roads flooded and trees down
A tree has come down on Stroud Green as Storm Henk batters the district.
The large tree, one of the well-known landmarks that edges the green, is currently blocking the path, pavement and part of Racecourse Road.
West Berkshire Council has issued an advisory notice this afternoon and said the strongest winds were expected to last until around 5pm, and could hit 70mph.
A Met Office amber weather warning for wind and a yellow warning for rain is still in place across the area and lasts until 8pm.
The Environment Agency has also issued 36 Flood Alerts across the Thames Valley, including two flood warnings in West Berkshire.
There are also a number of flood alerts in the district, including on the River Pang from East Ilsley to Pangbourne and Sulham Brook; the River Kennet from Thatcham to Reading, the River Thames at Pangbourne and the River Kennet from Hungerford to Newbury.
West Berkshire Council also confirmed that planning is underway for potential groundwater pumping in Great Shefford.
It said this could happen in the next week and would require temporary road closures in the area.
A number of roads across the area have also been hit by localised flooding after the rain continued throughout the day.
Travel disruption and damage to power supplies is also expected as the storm continues into the evening.
The Met Office warning said there is a “good chance” of power cuts and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, could also be affected.
Longer journey times and cancellations to road, rail and air travel are also likely, it warned.
The warning came into force at 10am today and runs until 8pm tonight.
People are being warned to take care as buildings could be damaged and flying debris, such as roof tiles, could lead to serious injuries.
“Stay indoors as much as possible,” the warning added. “If you do go out, try not to walk, or shelter, close to buildings and trees.
“In advance of high winds, check for loose items outside your home and secure them. Items include bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences.
“People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.”
It is expected that some areas will have seen up to 50mm of rain also fall by later tonight.
