Traffic congestion in Newbury continues

Heavy traffic is queuing on a number of town centre roads today (Thursday), in a third day of morning congestion.

The junction of Kings Road/Boundary Road and Hambridge Road in Newbury was closed earlier this week after reports of a suspected gas pipe leak.

SGN implemented a full road closure at the busy junction and said it expects it will remain closed for around seven to 10 days.

The AA is showing traffic build up on parts of Bath Road, London Road and Bartholomew Street this morning.

The closure means that the planned roadworks initially scheduled for Cognition Land and Water to carry out highway and drainage improvements for the Sterling Cables site that were meant to start on Monday morning will not now take place until after the gas works are complete.

West Berkshire Council said the closure was necessary "due to the position of the pipe in the road".

It apologised for the inconvenience caused by the works.
