New support for victims of abuse in West Berkshire
A new domestic abuse support provider is taking over in West Berkshire.
The organisation currently works in neighbouring areas of Berkshire – Bracknell, Reading and Wokingham.
Nationally it also has valuable connections through its Safelives accreditation and affiliation to Women’s Aid Federation of England (WAFE).
BWA trustees chairwoman Margaret Rice-Jones said: “We have been working in West Berkshire for many years and understand the specific needs of the area well.
“Domestic abuse can have lasting consequences and opportunities to access support are vital to the wellbeing of survivors, children and the wider community.
“We are delighted to now broaden our work to provide a wider range of support to survivors and their children in West Berkshire.”
BWA will provide safe accommodation for women and children in its Berkshire refuges.
This provides a safe place for anyone fleeing domestic abuse.
It also has specialist provision for Asian women and their children.
If staying within Berkshire is not a safe option, BWA can also help access refuges spaces across the UK.
Specially-trained Independent Domestic Violence Advisers (IDVAs) and outreach workers will work directly with survivors to provide emotional and practical support.
This might include safety planning, housing, finances, legal support, health needs and work, education or training. They can also support with children’s needs.
Paul Coe, West Berkshire Council’s interim executive director (people), said: “This is a vital service, supporting some of our most vulnerable residents and we recognise the valuable experience and local connections that BWA will bring to their work.
“The council and other local services will be working collaboratively with BWA to deliver a high-quality, person-centred service to those affected by domestic abuse.”
The BWA Domestic Abuse helpline 0808 801 0882 is available 24/7.
