Thatcham children scoot to success

Spurcroft School scootathlon boosts school funds

SCOOT, run, scoot!

That’s what children at Spurcroft School did last week at a scootathlon to help raise funds for their school.

Children aged between three and five ran two laps and scooted twice around a track on the playground in more than 10 heats of 10 to 12 children.

Early years teacher Unity Speakman organised the event and said she had been delighted with the response from families.

“Parents assisted their children with transition and some children were really slick, jumping on to their scooters and whizzing off without hesitation; it definitely highlighted those with competitive drive,” she said.

Mrs Speakman organised the event after seeing a children’s scootathlon at Eton Dorney in 2015, although Spurcroft decided to drop the bike aspect of the event for safety reasons.

As a keen triathlete, Mrs Speakman wanted to celebrate Team GB’s triathlon medal successes at the Rio Olympics and Paralympics.

The event raised around £750, which will be spent on new role play furniture for the school’s home corner.

“I am hopeful the event will be repeated for the older children, with longer distances running and scooting, but probably in the summer when it is warmer for spectators,” Mrs Speakman said.
