Ten-year-old breaks record at 100th parkrun
A girl broke all records at the 100th Newbury parkrun at Greenham Common on Saturday, finishing in the fastest time ever run by a 10-year-old in any parkrun in the UK.
Alexandra Scrivener, from Oxford City AC, completed the 5km race in a time of 20 minutes 1 second.
A total of 384 runners, ranging from six years old to 74, crossed the finishing line for the landmark event.
While the majority of runners were from Newbury and West Berkshire, the event also attracted visitors from as far afield as London, Cambridgeshire, Dorset and Cornwall.
The event was won by James Knight from Overton Harriers & AC in 16 minutes 29 seconds, with Sheena Keates of Runnymede Runners the fastest woman, with a time of 19 minutes 56 seconds.
Organisers also awarded a prize for the runner who had the biggest improvement between the first and 100th parkrun. This went to Debbie Futcher who ran exactly 7 minutes and 13 seconds faster than she did at the first event.
Newbury parkrun director, Rachael Elliott, said: “I am delighted by the success of Newbury parkrun, and genuinely stunned by the achievements of many of the runners.”
Parkrun has seen plenty of success stories since its formation in February, particularly those of Alex Money and his son Tommy, who have clocked up 65 parkruns between them in 2013 alone.
Somewhat suitably, the 100th parkrun coincided with Alex’s 50th run, while son Tommy was awarded his “10 club” t-shirt for completing 10 runs.
As the event is free, runners are encouraged to volunteer as helpers for a minimum of three times a year to ensure the event takes place each week, whether it be through operating timers, scanning finishing tokens, marshalling or manning clipboards.
