Teachers thanked and celebrated at Hindu cultural event in Newbury at St Bartholomew’s School on February 28

Newbury’s Hindu community came together to celebrate teachers and educators.

Continuing on with a tradition which began in 2018, the Bharati Sakha, a local branch of the community organisation Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS), celebrated Guru Vandana Divas on Friday, February 28, at St. Bartholomew’s School.

The event, which is also known as Teacher’s Appreciation Day, was said by organisers to have “honoured the invaluable contributions of educators and reinforced the significance of the teacher-student relationship in Indian culture”.

A large group of children, ranging from nursery to A-level students, played a crucial role in the event by inviting around 25 teachers from various schools across Newbury.

During the event, students expressed their gratitude by thanking and congratulating their teachers, acknowledging their dedication, and seeking their blessings.

Around 200 people, which included children, teachers and parents, attended the event.

The celebration commenced with the ceremonial hoisting of the HSS flag, the lighting of the traditional lamp, and Saraswati Vandana, paying homage to the Hindu Goddess of Knowledge, Saraswati.

This was followed by an insightful presentation on the significance of Saraswati Vandana, Guru Vandana Divas, contribution of HSS as an organisation to Newbury, and the revered role of teachers in society.

Bharati Sakha member Sanjeev Agarwala said: “The Bharati Sakha and HSS continue their efforts to foster community engagement and uphold the traditions of Guru-Shishya [teacher-student] reverence.

“The success of this year’s Guru Vandana Divas sets a strong foundation for future celebrations, inspiring students and teachers alike.”
