UPDATE: Start date for 10 weeks of Theale high street gas works delayed
UPDATE: Works to replace a gas main on a busy high street have been delayed.
SGN engineers were due to start a 10-week project to replace the gas main in Theale High Street today (Monday, January 27).
But the gas supplier has now delayed its works until Wednesday (January 29), West Berkshire Council has confirmed.
The council apologised on behalf of SGN for the date change, adding it did not instruct the company to do so.
SGN will still be on site from today (Monday) setting up equipment and machinery in preparation for its works.
A one-way lane closure will start on Wednesday from 6am and will affect traffic travelling west along the High Street from Hoad Way towards Station Road.
A diversion will be in place via Church Street, The Green, The Bath Road, Hoad Way and vice versa.
But traffic travelling east will remain unaffected.
Parking restrictions will be in place from today, with no on street parking available on the west side of the road.
The Jet Black 1 bus service will run as normal through the High Street today and tomorrow (Tuesday).
Reading Buses’ website reads: “This is due to a delay with the roadwork to Theale High Street.
“During this time, all stops in both directions will be in use for customers to board and alight from. We apologise for any confusion during this time.”
Newburytoday understands the works have been delayed due to the emergency water works in The Green, which was reopened after repairs were completed on Wednesday afternoon (January 22).
In a letter it previously sent to residents, SGN said the works are essential to provide a permanent solution for gas escapes and to ensure safe gas supply can continue for residents and businesses.
It will replace the current metal pipe with a plastic one in the hopes this will reduce the need for future emergency repairs on this section of the road.
But some business owners previously told newburytoday they are concerned about the impact the long-term closure will have on them.
