Spurcroft Primary School Goes Green

CHILDREN at Spurcroft Primary School learned about sustainable energy and healthy eating using equipment loaned by the Atomic Weapons Establishment as part of national science week.

Pupils from Years 5 to 6 examined how Thatcham might cope in the future without fossil fuels. AWE environmental specialist Giles Davis talked to the children about various forms of sustainable energy. This was followed by a demonstration of a wind turbine loaned to the school from AWE’s schools liaison scheme.

And pupils from Years 1 and 2 looked at healthy eating with help from AWE’s skeleton ‘Boney Boris’. Using a bag of bones, body tunic, jaw models, miniature skeleton the children examined how important lifestyle is in maintaining healthy bones.

Spurcroft Primary School teacher Mrs Jones said: “The children really benefited from the outreach work from AWE. They enjoyed learning about different forms of renewable energy from a visiting speaker who was able to answer a lot of their probing questions. They have also benefited from exploring how wind turbines work by assembling and running a model wind turbine; seeing a working model was a great way of initiating discussion.”

AWE works with local schools to foster and inspire an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.
