Cotswold Sports Centre kicks off new over 50s walking football class in Tilehurst
A new weekly walking football class has started for people with reduced mobility or medical conditions.
The popular sport — hosted at Cotswold Sports Centre in Tilehurst — uses the same rules as standard football, but without the running and sprinting.
The centre, managed by Everyone Active in partnership with West Berkshire Council (WBC), believes the new classes will help to combat loneliness and encourage men and women over 50 to improve their physical and mental health.
Contract manager at Everyone Active, Richard May, said: “Walking football is a brilliant way to stay fit and improve balance, coordination and muscle strength, all while having fun and making friends.
“We are so excited to bring these new classes to the local community and enable people to try out this fantastic sport in a fun and safe environment.”
WBC’s executive member for public health, culture, leisure, sport and countryside, Janine Lewis (Lib Dem, Tilehurst and Purley), added: “Walking football shows there’s no reason to miss out on your favourite sports at any age.
“It’s a really fun take on the beautiful game that not only keeps you fit but also introduces you to a team of new friends.”
Sessions will take place every Thursday from 11am until 12pm. Each session costs £3.90.
They are open to anyone over 50, regardless of ability or previous experience.
