Speen Village Fete hailed a success
More than £4,000 raised for local causes
ORGANISERS have declared this year’s Speen Village Fete as one of the best yet, with more than £4,000 raised for local causes.
And that figure is set to rise as funds are still being counted following the annual event last Saturday, which saw villagers and visitors pack on to the recreation ground as the rain stayed away and the weather remained warm.
Families enjoyed a mix of entertainment, activities and refreshments, with music provided by Cold Ash Brass, who played some modern pieces along with some old favourites.
There was a wide range of children’s games and competitions which kept the youngsters amused, as did the face painting by Little Munchkins.
As well as the traditional coconut shy and bowling for the pig, the reintroduction of the popular egg-throwing contest was a big hit, as pairs competed to throw an egg the furthest without breaking it.
The barbecue was a sell-out, as was the beer tent provided by the Hare and Hounds hotel, while the grand raffle raised its largest ever amount.
Other attractions included a very busy tea tent, homemade cakesale, tombola, a giant bouncy castle, ice cream, book stall, a huge bric-a-brac selection and a plant stall provided by the hard-working Speen Allotment members.
Chairman Chris Hook said: “The fete team this year has excelled itself, with record attendances and record takings, which should see the fete committee able to donate even more to good local causes.
“None of it would be possible without the support of so many local businesses and villagers who have given freely of their time and money to make this fete one of the best in the area.”
