Newbury Soup Kitchen hosts Christmas dinner to help the most vulnerable in the community
Newbury Soup Kitchen hosted its annual Christmas party to help some of the most vulnerable people in the community during the festive period.
The special event took place on the evening of Thursday, December 19 and 64 homeless or vulnerable people in the Newbury area were served a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings.
The Ashampstead farm shop and deli Vicars Game provided the meat, vegetables came from Waitrose and Tesco and the rest of the food came from the soup kitchen’s Sainsbury’s collection as well as donations made by members of the public throughout the year.
Donated food and food that would be otherwise discarded by supermarkets that is still in excellent condition is always used in the kitchen’s meals which saves food waste throughout the year.
Santa Claus attended the event to provide some entertainment, and he handed out party bags filled with goodies that were also donated by the public.
The bags were kindly printed by local company Squeegee & Ink Screen Printing Studio.
Newbury Soup Kitchen CEO and founder Meryl Praill said: “This was a community event supported by the community for the community.
“So many people came for the social side, but most importantly it was providing a good hearty meal and to help people feel part of society and cared for in a non-judgemental way.
“So many people and companies have donated, and we are incredibly grateful. I want to thank you all so much.
“Also I want to thank our incredible, beautiful volunteers who give so much kindness and love to our clients all year around. It is magical and I cannot thank them all enough.
“If you would like to donate or volunteer, please remember, the homeless and vulnerable are not just for Christmas so please do not forget the charity sector the rest of the year.”
