Police close bridge in Newbury in multi-agency response to fear for welfare incident




Thames Valley Police has closed Racecourse Road bridge as it responds to a welfare incident.

The incident, involving a man in his 40s, happened today (Saturday) around midday.

Police cars, a fire engine and other agencies are at the scene.

A TVP spokesperson said: "This relates to a fear for welfare incident involving a man aged in his 40s.

"The situation is ongoing with officers remaining at the scene and road closures are currently in place."

Fire crews were at the scene for around four and half hours.

A spokesperson for Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 11:43am on Sunday, 1 October, we were called by Thames Valley Police to assist with an incident on Racecourse Road, Newbury.

"Two Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Newbury Fire Station and the Aerial Ladder Platform from Whitley Wood Fire Station were sent to the scene, alongside one RBFRS Officer.

"Crews supported Thames Valley Police at the scene and were there for approximately four hours and 33 minutes."
