Park and stride scheme at Dunstan Green Car Park considered for Francis Baily Primary School
Thatcham Town Council has been looking at introducing a school run parking permit scheme to the town.
The plan, which imitates the nationally practiced ‘Park and Stride’ scheme, was suggested by West Berkshire Council.
The proposal is for Francis Baily Primary School on Skillman Drive.
It is hoped that the initiative will promote active travel.
The proposed pilot parking location is Dunstan Green Car Park.
The spaces would be available for 10 – 12 vehicles being authorised to park during term time only during 8.30am – 9.15am and 2.45pm – 3.30pm.
A recreation and amenities committee discussed the logistics of the scheme including how permits would be administered and monitored.
Councillor Simon Pike (Lib Dem, Thatcham West) said: “I recall this from when it was discussed previously in 2021.
“It seems to me to be a very complicated solution to a very straightforward problem.
“It appears West Berkshire Council would issue permits that do not give priority to any particular parents and do not prevent any other parents from parking there anyway.”
He suggested it would work “far better” unofficially.
He added: “There is a question on the wear and tear of the car park as well.”
West Berkshire Council has confirmed that a contribution towards surface maintenance would be made.
The town council committee approved the proposal – in the form of a trial period - in a recent meeting.
But it is subject to confirmation that that school has been consulted.
The proposal will be reviewed in one year.
