Over 50 firefighters called to Plastow Green fire on Wednesday, January 22, caused by log burner
More than 50 firefighters were deployed to tackle a fire caused by a log burner that engulfed the roof of a rural home.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service firefighters responded to the house fire in Plastow Green, between Headley and Ashford Hill, at approximately 4am yesterday (Wednesday).
At its peak, the operation to extinguish the fire involved eight fire engines, two water carriers and a range of specialised vehicles.
A fire service spokesperson said: “Crews worked diligently, employing jets and hose reels to bring the fire under control.
“Thanks to their coordinated efforts, the fire was contained, and the incident was gradually scaled down to four fire engines by 11am.
“Crews made every effort to save items from the property.”
The spokesperson also stated that an investigation into the fire had taken place which found that the cause was a log burner.
In response to the fire, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service issued the following advice for log burner owners: “Ensure your burner is properly installed, maintained, and regularly serviced by a qualified person.
“Wood-burning stoves should be placed on a fire-resistant base and not directly on to a hardwood floor or carpeted surface.
“Ensure you use the right type of wood or coal.
“The chimney or flue should be cleaned at the end of each heating season and at least once during the heating season.
“Use a protective fireguard.
“Remove ash and burnt fuel once it has cooled.”
