North Hampshire voters set to go to the polls

Local election for borough council and police and crime commissioner

THE countdown to tomorrow's (Thursday’s) local election is underway, with candidates setting out their political stalls and out canvassing across North Hampshire.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has 60 seats, with 20 up for election tomorrow.

The current political composition of the council comprises Conservative with 32 seats, Labour (17), Liberal Democrat (six), Independent Forum (four) and Independent (one).

One third of the council comes up for election every year, except for the year when there is a Hampshire County Council election.

The next one is due next year.

A total of four, local North Hampshire borough council wards are up for election – Baughurst and Tadley North; Kingsclere; Pamber and Silchester; and Tadley South.

Details of candidates standing for election were published in the April 28 edition of the Newbury Weekly News, on pages 34 and 35.

Borough councillors are elected for four years, and candidates will serve until 2020.

A total 16 parish councils borough-wide are also up for election on May 5, including Baughurst, Baughurst Common and Baughurst Wolverton.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm.

The count for the borough council election and also the count of local votes cast in north Hampshire for the election of the police and crime commissioner (PCC) for Hampshire, will both take place at 10am on Friday, May 6, at the Hampshire Court Hotel, 1 Centre Drive, Chineham, Basingstoke, RG24 8BG.

The returning officer is Laura Taylor.
