Newbury Scouts sleep rough for charity

2nd Newbury Scouts organised it as part of their global challenge badge, for which they had to investigate an issue locally and internationally.
After learning about Reading-based Launchpad, the Scouts opted to raise awareness and funds for the homeless support charity.
The Scouts started with a street collection, which raised £95.
Last Friday, they took part in a sleep-out where they spent the night in the Hub at St Bartholomew's School, an undercover walkway.
The Scouts slept in cardboard boxes, in their clothes and with no food or washing facilities.
Scout leader Lara Desroche said: “They are quite used to sleeping in the cold so they quite enjoyed it. I think it really has given them a better understanding of the issues; the really interesting thing was how much homeless people are ignored.
“The Scouts collected the money on the streets and they were ignored – it gave them a real idea of how ignored and vulnerable homeless people are.”
To raise extra funds, the Scouts also wrote to various local companies asking for a donation. Those that responded included Chris Fidler Garage Services, which donated £25, Quantel offered £50 and Newbury Building Society contributed £200.
Anyone wishing to make a donation should make cheques payable to 2nd Newbury Scout Group and send it to 2nd Newbury Scout Hut, West Street, Newbury, Berkshire RG14 1BD.
To complete the international part of their badge, the Scouts will now speak to the Rotary Club about its Shoebox appeal, which sends gifts to disadvantaged people in Eastern Europe.
