Newbury Peacocks stores closed as company announces redundancies

Peacocks went into administration in January but Edinburgh Woollen Mill has now swooped to buy the firm.
A total of 6,000 jobs will be saved but 3,100 staff will be made redundant.
Edinburgh Woollen Mill is yet to confirm whether Newbury’s two Peacocks stores in the Kennet Shopping centre and at Newbury Retail Park will be affected, but both stores are currently closed.
Peacocks also has branches in Basingstoke, Reading, Wokingham, Slough, Maidenhead and Swindon.
Chairman and Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group Peacocks, Philip Day said: “I am pleased to announce that with immediate effect 338 stores, 57 concessions, three distribution centres and the head office operations belonging to the Peacocks group will come into the EWM Group of companies, saving some 6,000 jobs, including 250 at the Cardiff headquarters.
“We look forward to working with our new colleagues to rebuild the business in what is a very tough economic environment for High Street retailers in the UK.”
Mr Day said he hoped more jobs and stores will be saved.
