Newbury knitters donate 1,000th blanket to Dogs Trust
Newbury residents Cynthia Vockins, aged 76 and her sister Betty Baker, aged 72, founded a knitting group in memory of their friend who used to knit blankets for rescue dogs.
The group is now meeting regularly to knit blankets for dogs at the rehoming centre.
Ms Vockins said: "We’ve been knitting blankets for Dogs Trust for eight years now.
"Everyone in the group is aged from 60 to 83. We are all neighbours and all love dogs so we thought it would be a way of doing something special for the dogs to keep them warm in their kennels.
“We really enjoy popping in to the rehoming centre to donate the blankets as we get to see the dogs too and it’s rewarding to see the blankets go to good use. The staff at Dogs Trust do such a wonderful job and it’s a pleasure to give something back.”
Assistant Manager at Dogs Trust Newbury, Jenny Hopkins, said: "We are enormously grateful to Cynthia and everyone in the knitting circle for their generous blanket donations.
"It is always a treat to receive them as every blanket is stitched so beautifully and the dogs all love snuggling up on them as they are so cosy.
"They help to provide the dogs with the home comforts they’re missing while they await new homes.”
The group is always in need of wool and the Dogs Trust is always in need of old, clean blankets and quilts - anyone who wishes to make a donation should drop it off at The Dog's Trust at Plumb’s Farm in Hamstead Marshall.
