Ten girls join new Guiding unit

GIRL Guides young and old made their promises as the newly-formed 5th Kennet Vale Rainbows were sworn in last week.

The 10 Rainbows made their Guiding promise in front of family members, then enjoyed party games and tea.

One mother, Helen Carmichael, said: “My daughter was buzzing – although I expect the cake had something to do with that.”

Kennet Vale district commissioners, Jan Stowell and Julie Dunwell, attended the event and presented the five new Rainbow leaders with their badge tabs.

Two of the leaders, Stephanie Steevenson and Laura Chapman, took the opportunity to make their promise as an adult for the first time.

Mrs Chapman said: “I was so proud of all the girls last night. They were all wonderful.”

Mrs Steevenson has been linked with Guiding in Thatcham since she was town mayor in 2010.

She is a county ambassador for Guiding but this is the first time that she has had the opportunity to make the promise.

Mrs Steevenson said: “I feel so proud and to make my promise alongside these girls was a privilege.”

The unit was formed in September and five more girls will join in January.
