Kennet Shopping centre car park gets more EV charge points
New electric vehicle (EV) charge points have been installed at the Kennet Shopping centre multi-storey car park in Newbury town centre.
Starting from October, drivers can now charge their EVs using two dedicated public charging bays located on the top floor.
There are two 22kW sockets in the bays that sit alongside spaces for West Berkshire Council’s fleet vehicles and the West Berkshire Car Club’s EV, operated by Enterprise.
This installation marks the first of many EV charge points being rolled out at council-owned sites, supporting the growing demand for electric vehicle charging across the district.
Stuart Gourley (Lib Dem, Newbury Clay Hill), executive member for environment and highways at West Berkshire Council, said: “These new chargers are a major step in promoting low-carbon travel within our community.
“We’re proud to support the car club and it's great to see better charging facilities for the council’s EV fleet.
“I want to thank our dedicated teams, especially the car parks team, for making this possible.
“This is another step forward in improving our charging and our parking facilities across West Berkshire.”
Users will soon be able to make contactless payments via debit or credit card with the cost for using the 22kW charge points at 44p per kWh.
Further EV charge points have already been installed in Hungerford Church Street car park and the council is now waiting on the grid connection and energy supply contract before going live.
