Specifically, the 36-year-old, from Upper Bucklebury and said to be currently of no fixed address, faces seven charges of intentional suffocation, affecting the ability to breathe of his partner at the time, Stacey Revens.

He is further charged with engaging in coercive control towards Ms Revens by repeatedly assaulting her and preventing her from leaving the home.

Next, Sharp faces two charges of assaulting Ms Revens by beating her.

Finally, he is accused of making a death threat to her, intending she would fear it would be carried out.

All the above offences were said to have been committed in Newbury on various dates in January and February this year.

Sharp, who was legally represented by Beth Vaughn, was told the case would be sent to be dealt with by a judge and, in the event of a trial, by a jury sitting at Reading Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

District judge Samuel Goozee meanwhile denied Sharp bail and remanded him in custody.
