The 37-year-old, of Station Road, Thatcham, is charged with unlawfully and maliciously assaulting Nick Goulding with intent to do him grievous bodily harm in Thatcham on May 6 last year.

The charge is indictable only – meaning it cannot be heard by the lower courts.

Magistrates therefore declined further jurisdiction and sent the case to be dealt with by a judge and, in the event of a trial, by a jury sitting at Reading Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

Mr Paterson, who was legally represented by Joanna Benn, was meanwhile released on bail with conditions.
