M4 closures between Hungerford, Chieveley and Theale start tonight

A series of overnight closures on the M4 will start this evening (Wednesday).

The motorway will be closed to traffic in both directions between Junctions 13 (Chieveley) and 12 (Theale) from 9pm until 6am on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, August 18
  • Thursday, August 19
  • Tuesday, August 24

On Monday, August 23 and Wednesday, August 25, only the eastbound carriageway will be closed overnight (9pm until 6am).

The closure is to enable the Tidmarsh Road bridge to be repaired and a diversion will be in place via the A4 while the work takes place.

In addition to the overnight closures, the stretch of road between junctions 13 (Chieveley) and 14 (Hungerford) will be closed in both directions all weekend, from 9pm Friday until 6am on Monday.

This is so a large crane can be brought in to replace the central reservation.

Following the closure, narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit will be in place until the works are completed.

The closure is part of a programme of improvements to Wickham bridge, which has sustained water damage.

Signed diversions will be in place via the A338, A4 and A34.

Chieveley Services will remain open throughout the closure period.
