IN this week’s Newbury Weekly News, town centre crime is not being recorded on CCTV cameras after West Berkshire Council stopped funding them with no replacement system in place.

The cameras – considered vital in deterring criminals and reducing crime - were switched off on April 1 and have not been in operation since.

In other news, parents are being warned not to let their children walk to or from school alone, after an attempted abduction and an assault took place on pupils last week.

Trinity School and Shaw-cum-Donnington Primary School have asked people to remain vigilant, while police have put extra patrols in place in the area.

Also this week, West Berkshire runners have tested their endurance and raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity by taking part in the London Marathon.

Meanwhile, there has been anger in East Ilsley after three ducks were shot dead in the village duck pond by an unknown gunman.

In this week’s Hungerford edition of the Newbury Weekly News, a publican is seriously injured in a major brawl.

In Thatcham this week, campaigners are preparing to battle West Berkshire Council and the planning inspectorate in an effort to save the Lower Way field from housing.

And on the Hampshire pages, the Queen visited Highclere Stud, in Burghclere, to see her horses, the weekend before her 90th birthday last Thursday (April 21), with celebrations across North Hampshire to mark the day - and lots more planned on her June 11 official birthday.
