Picture special: A look through the archives at Newbury’s hospitals over the last 75 years of the NHS
As the country celebrates 75 years of the NHS, Newburytoday takes a look through the archives to highlight the contribution made to our local health services over the past seven decades.
The district is currently served by the West Berkshire Community Hospital, but had previously been home to the Sandleford Hospital and the Newbury District Hospital.
Over the years, the Newbury Weekly News was present to capture all the changing faces of our healthcare system in West Berkshire – charting the fundraising that has also helped some of it to fruition.
And also highlighting the fun the staff and patients managed to have along the way, such as the ceremonial carving of the turkey for those spending Christmas Day in hospital.
We have also heard stories of the women who would walk themselves up the hill to hospital when they went into labour.
There are stories of love, of loss, of hope and of happiness.
Share your memories of Newbury’s hospitals – past and present – as we continue to celebrate the NHS in the week that it turns 75.
