Hundreds celebrate Newbury Primark opening
THERE was a party atmosphere in Newbury’s Parkway shopping as Primark opened its doors today, Tuesday.
Hundreds of customers queued up in advance to get a glimpse of the multinational fashion giant’s new outlet, which officially opened at 10am.
And first in, hoping to bag some bargains, was Simon Ball, aged 29, who said: “There’s been such a build-up, I couldn’t resist coming along early to see what it was all about.”
As well as national Primark bosses, the opening – accompanied by a live DJ – was attended by civic dignitaries including Newbury MP Lee Dillon, town mayor Andy Moore and West Berkshire Council chairman Billy Drummond (Lib Dem, Newbury Greenham).
Mr Dillon said: “It’s great that Newbury’s retail business continues to expand, offering shoppers a great range.”
His research had shown that, for every £10 spent in stores like Primark, another £3.60 was generated for the high Street in general.
Mr Dillon added: “This will be a big boost for the town.”
Mr Moore said: “It’s great that this well-known company has come to our town.
“I wish everyone, and particularly the local staff who have joined the company, all the best for the future.”
He added that stores like Primark would make Newbury a “destination town” for shoppers.
Parkway Shopping centre manager Andrew Marmot said: “Primark’s arrival marks an exciting new chapter for Parkway and for Newbury.
“We’re thrilled to welcome such a well-loved brand to the centre and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our town and the local economy.”
