Highclere Easter Egg Trail goes Down-ton a blast!
Hundreds of families flocked to the historic grounds of Highclere Castle on Saturday (April 19) to join in the annual charity Easter celebrations.
An Easter egg hunt and trail through the estate’s gardens and woodland, an Easter bonnet parade and petting farm were all on site for visitors and their little ones to enjoy.
The competition was judged by owner of the Highclere estate, of Downton Abbey fame, Lady Carnarvon.
Speaking after the event, she told newburytoday: “It was a fantastic family day out and we were so fortunate with the weather.
“I hope everyone had a good time and we are very grateful to those that came and supported the Murray Parish Trust (which provides mental health support to seriously-ill children and their families).
“We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.”
A spokesperson for the Murray Parish Trust added: “We are absolutely thrilled with how this year’s Highclere Easter Egg Trail went and were very grateful that the weather mostly played along.
“The event was completely sold out and we’ve had so much lovely feedback from families who really enjoyed exploring the trail and spending time in the beautiful Highclere gardens.
“One of the highlights of the day was the charming Easter bonnet parade.
“Just before the event began, a sudden gust of wind sent Easter eggs tumbling across the lawn and prompted a quick relocation of the finish tent.
“We wish to give a huge thank you to the wonderful Highclere team who came to our rescue and helped us find a more sheltered spot, ensuring all the children were able to collect their Easter egg at the end of the trail.”
Newbury’s town band Watership Brass also played music on the day – conducted by the Easter Bunny.
A range of other wild and quirky outfits were adorned by visitors and performers on the day.
The horse in particular proved very popular.
