Heartstart and West Berks Foodbank benefit from Thatcham mayor's year of fundraising
This year the recipients were Heartstart Thatcham and West Berkshire Foodbank - which each received £1,658.93.
The funds were raised throughout the mayoral year at events such as the Thatcham Festival of Arts and Leisure, the civic carol service and Thatcham Family Fun Day.
Current town mayor, Mike Cole, handed out the cheques to representatives of the charities at his civic reception on Friday as one of the final tasks in the role.
West Berkshire Foodbank, which started about a year ago, provides emergency food for people in desperate need in West Berkshire.
Of West Berkshire Foodbank Mr Cole said: "There is an increasing demand on the Foodbank.
"The thing I like about it is that it provides food but it also gives advice.
"It's amazing how much of an affect that has on people."
Heartstart Thatcham, a British Heart Foundation initiative, also started a year ago and teaches people what to do in a life-threatening emergency – it gives simple skills save lives.
Mr Cole, who was on the first Heartstart course in Thatcham, said: "In two hours, you learn a huge amount.
"All the trainers are volunteers and it has trained over 100 people so far.
"It has expanded rapidly so far and it will save lives in Thatcham - there's absolutely no doubt about that."
