Guilty: head doorman David Wogan who who denied attacking publican at Old Waggon and Horses in Newbury
A HEAD doorman must pay almost £1,500 for a drunken attack on a town centre publican.
David Wogan caused mayhem outside The Old Waggon and Horses in Market Place, Newbury.
He had denied assaulting publican Jake Taylor.
But he was convicted, following a two-day trial at Reading magistrates’ Court which, finished on Monday, March 3, of committing assault by beating on February 5 last year.
A window was smashed and Mr Taylor was choked during the melee.
Ironically, Wogan had been head of security at the bar and was the holder of a Security Industry Association (SIA) door supervisor licence.
The 30-year-old, of Woodlark Road, Newbury, had also denied using threatening words or behaviour towards barman Sheldon Lyons on the same occasion, and he was cleared of this charge.
During the trial Shehneela Ahmed, prosecuting, said an argument broke out between Wogan and Mr Lyons, resulting in a physical altercation by the benches outside.
CCTV footage showed chaos as others joined in or tried to separate the pair.
Mr Taylor said he managed to calm the situation down but then Wogan tried to enter the pub to get his car keys.
Mr Taylor refused, telling him he was too drunk to drive.
Wogan tried to force his way inside then attacked Mr Taylor, choking him with both hands and causing a glass window in the front door to shatter.
At the conclusion of the trial on Monday, Wogan was fined £692.
In addition he was ordered to pay £480 costs plus a statutory victim services surcharge of £277.
