Outpouring of emotion as Wash Common café NuMee is 'forced to close'

THERE has been an emotional response to the news that a community café is reportedly having to close because of a disagreement over lease conditions.

NuMee, off Essex Street in Wash Common, has been a vital lifeline for many during the coronavirus crises.

But there was shock and disbelief when proprietor Sunita Shemar (pictured, far right, with staff waving farewell) posted on social media, stating: "I can’t believe I am about to post this… we (have) received a letter from our landlord’s solicitor with orders to vacate the premises, with five days to close the business and leave.

"Long story short, we were due to sign a renewed lease but unfortunately it differed from the principles we had agreed a few months back, and the negotiations fell apart suddenly.

"We have loved being part of your lives; being there when you all needed a little pick up... sharing with each other our stories and plans for the day.

"We love you all, and have loved our time in Wash Common.

"We can only hope that more independents with a passion for good food and good coffee continue to pop up in Newbury.

"I can’t express just how proud (and very emotional) I am of everything we have achieved together. Thank you all so much."

Customers have been hoping for a last minute reprieve for the business.

A petition has been created in a bid to persuade the landlord to change its mind and district councillor Tony Vickers (Lib Dem, Newbury Wash Common) said he has been seeking legal advice on Ms Shemar's behalf.

Meanwhile, customers hugged staff in emotional scenes today (Monday).

One of them, Sara Riley, said: "We've loved what Sunita has done for the community. It's more than just a coffee shop, it's a community hub. It's a quiet refuge in which to meet friends."

Another, Alice Britton, said: "It's been so friendly and welcoming, especially during the Covid situation.

"It has certainly helped with lots of people's mental health and wellbeing."

The café provides a variety of sweet and savoury snacks, including vegan and gluten-free cakes and vegan energy balls.

In addition, local chefs were invited to provide catering for special evenings featuring Indian and Thai food.

Ms Shemar said she had struggled to maintain the business during the toughest of times, offering take-away service during lockdowns.

She said she and her staff were heartbroken at having to leave so suddenly.

An online petition created by Olivia Lewis on change.org states: "NuMee is my local café... it's so much more than just a business though. It's a much loved part of the community.

"Over lockdown Sunita and her team offered not just take-aways to keep going but also a friendly face for local people who couldn't see their families and friends.

"There is nowhere else locally to gather and catch up over a cuppa. They source their coffee locally, as well as employing local people.

"Please join me in imploring the landlord not to deprive the community if this gathering place, or at the very least to allow them time to wind down and for everyone to visit and say farewell."

The landlord has been contacted for comment.
