She said she is looking forward to a well-earned rest after years of early starts – but will miss her friends and customers who she has enjoyed many long chats with.

Ms Warren, who moved to Thatcham in the early 70s, told newburytoday all her colleagues, past and present, have become her friends and she still plans to call in to see them when she does her shopping.

Sharing her fond memories of working at the shop, she said: “I enjoyed meeting all the people and we became friends. I just liked the whole experience.

“I would get [the customers’] magazines out on time for when they came in.

“We used to dress up for charity. I was Little Red Riding Hood.”

Ms Warren worked on the checkout tills and kiosk, but said her favourite time was in the former deli section, which she described as being a “right laugh”.

Her friend John Bremner said: “[Her retirement] hasn’t sunk in with her customers yet.

“She’ll miss a lot of the old faces. They all came in basically to have a good old chat with her.”

Store manager Peter Davey also thanked his former employee. He said: “Georgie is much loved by all the colleagues and customers here.

“Whilst she will be greatly missed, we want to wish her all the best in her retirement.”

Ms Warren said she plans to spend her retirement with her grandchildren, gardening and going for walks.

She is also planning to go on a nice coach holiday.
