Full house for talk in Kingsclere on history of Royal British Legion

A full house gathered in Kingsclere on Friday (April 4) to hear an enlightening talk by Lieutenant General James Bashall.

More than 100 people, some as far afield as Northampton, enjoyed a presentation by former president of the Royal British Legion Lieutenant General James Bashall at The Fieldgate Centre.

The proceeds from the talk raised £1,000 for the RBL.

Mr Bashall explained that unlike other countries, our government does less to fund the rehabilitation of wounded service personnel, leaving much of this responsibility to charities such as the RBL.

But he added Britain is a compassionate county in terms of remembering those who gave their lives in combat, as seen in the huge numbers of Remembrance Services and war memorials all over the country.

The presentation ended with an expression of gratitude from Jason Hart, chairman of the Kingsclere RBL, and a presentation of wine to Mr Bashall by Janine Westropp, former president of the Newbury RBL who planned this event back in July.

The grand raffle with 15 prizes was then drawn, before a final thank you from Mike Leah, chairman of Kingsclere Local History Association.
