First edition of Watership Down fetches £1,500

The book, which went under the hammer at Bloomsbury Auctions in London this week, is particularly valuable because it is a first edition copy in its original dustwrapper and is in excellent condition.
Mr Adams’ signature was expected to have added up to £300 to its value.
The sale of the book coincides with the 40th anniversary of the publication of Watership Down in November 1972.
It was Richard Adams’s first novel and it was rejected by thirteen publishers before a small independent publisher, Rex Collings Ltd, decided that it was worth a gamble.
The book has now sold more than 50 million copies worldwide.
It has won several awards; it has never been out of print and it is Penguin Books’ best-selling novel of all time.
Mr Adams, now aged 92, began telling the story of Watership Down to his two daughters, Juliet and Rosamond - to whom the book is dedicated - and they encouraged him to write the book.
The copy is among around 400 modern first editions, many signed by their authors, which are being sold by former national newspaper columnist Clive Hirschhorn and which are expected to sell for between £750,000 and £1 million.
