Farmer George Brown of Priors Farm in Peasemore near Newbury ploughs massive protest message below Heathrow flight path
A farmer has ploughed the message ‘No farmers, no future, food for thought’ into one of his fields to protest the Government’s inheritance tax changes.
George Brown of Priors Farm in Peasemore spent four hours writing the message in the 60-acre field using a cultivator on the back of his John Deere tractor on March 6.
Mr Brown thought his farm – which primarily grows crops such as oats and barley – would be a great place to write such a message as it is right under the Heathrow flight path.
He said: “This is very much aimed at the Government. They seem absolutely cancerous towards farmers to be quite honest. They are attacking us from every single direction.”
He joined farmers up and down the country in criticising the Government’s plans to restrict the 100 per cent agricultural relief from inheritance tax to the first £1m of combined agricultural and business property, something that will come into place on April 6.
He was also disparaging of the Government’s recent decision to scrap the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI), a scheme which paid English farmers to protect soil, restore hedgerows and boost nature recovery that was part of a post-Brexit payment scheme that replaced EU subsidies.
“It just seems like another bloody great attack on us,” Mr Brown said.
“Without any support any at all, goodness knows how any of us are going to continue at the moment.”
Mr Brown said he has had a “massive” response from his protest, with one TikTok video showing the message being created racking up over 600,000 views and 110,000 likes.
Talking about public opinion of farmers, Mr Brown said: “Everyone seems to be on side. The public have been hugely supportive of us which is a blessing and is nice to see.”
