Dog rescued from horrific conditions set to enjoy first Christmas with new owner thanks to Dogs Trust Newbury

A dog that was rescued from horrific conditions along with nearly 200 other pooches will be spending this Christmas in a loving home thanks to Dogs Trust Newbury.

Four-year-old crossbreed Carrie was one of 191 dogs that were seized by the RSPCA from a remote farm in Devon in March 2023.

The dogs were found in cramped crates and cages, many suffering from infected wounds, scars, and other severe health issues, and the owner of the dogs was later sentenced to 25 months in custody and banned from owning animals for life.

Among these dogs was Carrie, then known as Colada.

Dogs Trust Newbury was able to help five of the rescued dogs, including Carrie, who faced a few challenging months of veterinary care and behavioural rehabilitation.

Carrie was extremely under-socialised and wary of people, requiring significant patience to help her build trust and confidence.

In November 2023, a breakthrough came when Dogs Trust Newbury’s training and behavioural advisor Katie Burroughs began fostering Carrie in her own home.

Under Katie’s care and with the companionship of her two other dogs, Jackson and Elis, Carrie started to blossom.

Initially terrified of everyday household items like the TV and vacuum cleaner, she gradually overcame her fears through Katie’s consistent training.

These experiences were pivotal in helping Carrie adjust to home life.

In January 2024, Carrie found her forever happy place with Susan, who had been grieving the loss of her beloved Labrador.

When Susan saw Carrie’s photo on the Dogs Trust website, sitting under a Christmas tree with her paws crossed, the connection was instant, and she knew Carrie was the companion for her.

Susan said, “Adopting an adult dog takes time, patience, and perseverance, but it’s so rewarding.

“Carrie still has her quirks, but we enjoy each other’s company and have built a beautiful bond. I think she realises she’s landed on her paws.”

Despite initial challenges, including Carrie’s reluctance to come indoors and her anxiety, Susan’s love and understanding has transformed her into a confident, playful dog who loves long walks, chasing balls, and spending time in the garden.

As 2024 comes to an end, Carrie is preparing for the festive season in her new-found forever home.

This year, she’ll be enjoying long winter walks, snuggling up under blankets by the fireplace and tucking into many Christmas treats with Susan by her side.

It appears as though it will be a memorable Christmas for Carrie, marking her new beginning and fresh start with Susan.
