Archel Homes reveals plans to build 100 homes on former Jewson site in Pound Street in Newbury
A consultation has been launched by a housing developer that wants to build around 100 new homes on the former Jewson site in central Newbury.
The initial proposal by Archel Homes involves demolishing all the existing buildings at Jewson, Newbury Bathrooms and 26 and 28 Pound Street and building four blocks of flats and six terraced houses on the 1.36 acre plot of land.
There will be affordable housing provision of up to 30 homes in the plans for the 94 apartments and six houses proposed.
An Archel Homes spokesperson said: “At present the site does not make a positive contribution to the local street scene, particularly along Pound Street where the former Jewson’s yard is marked by unattractive boundary fencing topped with barbed wire.
“As a currently vacant site, the yard has also attracted anti-social behaviour such as fly-tipping and graffiti.
“With the eastern part of Pound Street already home to some very attractive residential buildings forming part of the Newbury town centre conservation area, the opportunity exists to extend this pleasant residential environment right along the northern side of Pound Street, filling in the current gap in the built fabric with attractive residential buildings.”
The houses and ground floor apartments on Pound Street and Rockingham road will have traditional front door access as well as new hedgerows and small front gardens.
There will be 83 car parking spaces provided at the rear of the site along with some landscaped courtyard areas and private gardens for each of the six houses.
Archel Homes has launched a consultation website for its Pound Street proposals which can be viewed at https://www.poundstreetconsultation.co.uk/
The website outlines the plans in more detail and gives Newburians the chance to provide feedback. The deadline for doing this is Monday, November 20.
After this consultation period is over, Archel Homes will go through all the feedback received before submitting a planning application to West Berkshire Council.
