Day trip to Ufton Court for competition winning Thatcham pupils
Thirty Year 6 pupils from Spurcroft Primary in Thatcham were given an interactive session in the morning where they examined West Berkshire’s wildlife and its habitat.
After lunch, and a nature walk around the manor house grounds, they got to try their hands at tree shaking, pond dipping, and meadow sweeping.
Teacher Christine Munday said: "Being involved in the AWE competition has allowed the children to really think about why it is important to protect the environment and the consequences of what might happen if we don’t.
"It gave them an opportunity to explore in depth what they could do to prevent climate change and an audience to show what they had learnt.
"The trip was a lovely extension to what they were learning in science and a chance to put the theory into practice.”
School governor and AWE facilities manager Nigel Margeson said: "A variety of activities are available at the centre, but given that this was a prize for winning the Schools Environmental Competition, the content was wholly appropriate and the children were totally engaged. It was an excellent day for everyone involved."
Spurcroft Primary was one of several to enter the competition and write a five minute play showing friends and family why we should all become more eco friendly.
