Council introduces 'Safer Journey' cards

CARDS containing a series of messages to help people with disabilities and mobility difficulties to take the bus will be handed out across the district..
The Safer Journey Cards, created by West Berkshire Council, contain eight messages to help bus users with hidden and physical disabilities and mobility difficulties to communicate clearly with the driver.
There are individual messages to chose from on the card with a space for users to add their destination, while there is also a card for users to write their own individual message.
Once users have selected the relevant message for their needs, they can fold up the card and show it to the bus driver when boarding the bus.
The cards have been designed to fold up and fit into the spare pocket alongside the concessionary bus pass if users have one. They display the following messages:
• "Please let me know when we get to... "
• "Please help check or scan my pass for me. I wish to go to... "
• "I am deaf. I wish to go to... "
• "Please be patient with me, I have a hidden disability. I wish to go to... "
• "Please speak slowly and face me to help me understand you better"
• "Please wait for me to sit down before moving away (in case I fall)"
The council says that the cards have been designed to help improve the experience of residents when taking the bus, and to help them grow their confidence and independence when travelling alone.
West Berkshire's executive member for Transport Policy, Hilary Cole, said: “The Safer Journey Cards have been made available to residents taking part in the Personalised Travel Planning project in the south of Newbury, and have proven to be one of the most requested items.
“They are a simple way to make people's lives and journeys easier.
“ We are encouraging anyone who might benefit from this facility or community groups to request cards."
The use of the cards are supported by various bus operators within the district.
The council plans to hold an event in Newbury later this year to promote both the Safer Journey Card and bus travel.
Cards and further information are available to download from the West Berkshire Council website at www.westberks.gov.uk/saferjourneycard or by contacting the Council's Transport Policy Team on 01635 42400.
