Primark one step closer to opening in Parkway Shopping in Newbury after West Berkshire Council approves plans

Primark is one step closer to opening in Newbury.

The discount fashion retailer will open a shop in the vacant former Debenhams unit in the Parkway Shopping centre in the near future.

Its planning application to make external alterations to the building were approved by West Berkshire Council on Friday (February 2).

The approved plans involve kitting out the façade of the unit to have it fall in line with Primark’s brand, such as re-cladding the entrance portal to the iconic turquoise and applying a “snowflake” vinyl graphic to the first floor window glazing.

They also involve splitting the former department store unit in two, with a larger unit servicing Primark and a smaller one creating an additional retail unit within Parkway.

It is not currently known whether another business has been found to take residence within this new, smaller unit.

The loading bay at the back of the unit on Park Road will be altered to suit Primark’s requirements and a new fire escape will be installed on Park Road as well.

Rumours that the global discount fashion store could move into the Parkway complex were reported by newburytoday as far back as December 2021.

Primark have been contacted for more information on the shop’s potential opening date.
