Could Boris Johnson be North Hampshire's next MP?

Rumours circulating in Westminster that Mr Johnson (pictured) wants to return to the House of Commons reached a frenzy after the Prime Minister, David Cameron, intimated in a recent interview with BBC Radio Berkshire that he would welcome the popular figure back into the fold.
He added that he would have no objections if Mr Johnson wanted to serve as an MP, while continuing in the role of London’s mayor for a year.
Asked if Mr Johnson should replace Sir George in the seat, Mr Cameron said: “Obviously it is up to North West Hampshire, and it’s up to Boris.
“I don’t get to pick all of the candidates, but Boris is a star and it would be great to have him back on the national team, as well as continuing with the great work he is doing in London.”
Cathy Osselton, the joint deputy chairwoman of the executive committee of the North West Hampshire Conservatives Association and a member of the committee that would be sifting through the applications for the post, said she was unable to comment about the matter. The next committee meeting is scheduled for next Thursday.
“The nomination process starts on May 1 and continues until May 31 – the closing date – then the nominations go to the sifting committee,” said Mrs Osselton, who is also Conservative councillor for Kingsclere on Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
Sir George, aged 72, announced in November that he would be retiring next May and would not be contesting the General Election.
Also party chief whip, Sir George has been the MP for North West Hampshire since 1997, where he has built a Conservative majority of 18,583. Born in Oxford, he lives in the constituency in Penton Mewsey, just outside Andover.
Sir George said on Tuesday that he would not comment “on this speculation” and Mr Johnson’s London office was equally non-committal.
A spokesman Sam Hart said: “The mayor is focused on delivering for London.”
Boris Johnson last sat in the House of Commons as MP for Henley between 2001 and 2008.
